MARSHALL, Ill. — Margaret Louise Ferris, 91 of Robinson, died at 1:14 a.m. (EDT) Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, at Good Samaritan Hospital, Vincennes, Ind. She was born April 8, 1921, in Marshall, Ill., the daughter of John M. Rademaker and Margaret B. Craig Rademaker.
She graduated from Marshall Township High School in 1939 and attended Eastern Illinois Teachers College, Charleston, Ill. She received a Bachelor of Science in education and graduated with high honors. Her first teaching position was at Charleston High School. She moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, following her husband who was serving in the U. S. Navy, where she taught physical education. After the war she and her husband returned to Marshall, and she taught physical education and English in the Martinsville High School for four years. She later taught social studies at Marshall Jr. High, retiring in 1976, when her husband accepted the postmaster’s position in Robinson.
Margaret was a life-long devout Catholic. She was an organist at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church until her death. She was a world traveler and enjoyed all sports, particularly golf. She was club champion at the Marshall Golf course. She was a volunteer for the Crawford Memorial Hospital gift shop, and was an avid bridge player. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, lifetime member of the IEA, a member of IRTA, and the Crawford County IRTA.
Margaret married Donald W. Ferris Sr., March 31, 1944 and he preceded her in death May 23, 1978. She also was preceded in death by her parents; her infant daughter, Margaret Annette Ferris; and her sister, Martha Haugh.
She is survived by her three sons, John (Jody) Ferris, Marshall, Donald Jr. (Heidi) Ferris, Ypsilanti, Mich., and Joseph (Cindy) Ferris, Robinson; five grandchildren, Allison (Sean) Medsker, Marshall, John J. Ferris, Jackson, Tenn., and Andrew (Courtney) Ferris, Jessica Ferris, and Jacob Ferris, all of Robinson; eight great-grandchildren, Nathan, Hayley, Logan, and Griffin Medsker, all of Marshall, Abigail, Evan, Emily, and Owen Ferris, all of Robinson; two sisters-in-law, Norma (Jack) Colegrove, Columbia, S.C. and Barbara Gagen, Marshall; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Robinson with the Rev. Al Allen, (Parochial Vicar-Effingham Deanery) officiating. Burial will be in Marshall City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Goodwine Funeral Home, Robinson, on Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, from 3 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to Robinson Booster Club, the Marshall School Foundation, or St. Elizabeth Catholic Church.
