  UPDATE 4: Deadly tornado roars through Oklahoma City suburb

  A monstrous tornado at least a half-mile wide roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, flattening entire neighborhoods and destroying an elementary school with a direct blow as children and teachers huddled against winds up to 200 mph. At least 51 people were killed, and officials said the death toll was expected to rise.

TERRE HAUTE — Josephine Marie Nasser Azar, 89, of Terre Haute passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2012 in Springhill Village. She was born December 25, 1922 in Terre Haute to Moses and Saleema Nasser.

Survivors include her son Jerry Azar of Terre Haute; granddaughter, Jamie Azar of Selingsgrove, PA; grandson, Jay Azar of Woodstock, CT; nieces, Mrs. Earl Heidlebaugh (Jan) of the Villages, FL, Mrs. Steve Kuchefski (Phillis) of the Villages, FL, and Mary Kay Krouskos of Clearwater, FL; and nephews, Dave Nasser (Linda), of Terre Haute, Raymond Nasser (Cheryl) of Naples, FL, Tony Nasser (Tracy) of Cincinnati, OH, Mose Nasser, Jr. (Susan) of Terre Haute, Tony Azar of Austin, TX, Abe Azar, Jr. of Largo, FL, Victor Azar of Largo, FL, Johnny Johnson, Jr. of Clearwater, FL, Alex Johnson, Clearwater, FL, Richard Azar of St. Louis, and Bradley Azar of Key West, FL; Sister-in-law Mrs. Johnny Johnson (Rachel) Clearwater FL., brother-in-law, Joseph Azar, Jr. (Janice) of Scotsdale, AZ; loved cousins, Mrs. Thomas Tanoos (MaryAnn) and John Khoury Nasser (Loretta); and lifelong friends Betty Azar and Helen Corey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis J. Azar; her parents; brother, Albert Nasser (Cis); and sisters, Ruth Nasser (George), Marion Nasser (Dave), and Rose Nasser (Mose).

Josephine and her husband owned and operated Azar’s Edgewood Shopping Center at Fruitridge and Wabash, and later Azar’s Market Basket at 21st and Hulman. She also was a longtime employee of Meis Brothers working in the Boulevard Room. She was a longtime member and past officer of Sigma Lambda Zeta sorority.  Josephine was also a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church and later St. Benedict Catholic Church. She loved music, dancing, cooking, and being with her friends, and was always available to all when needed.

There will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 23, 2012 in St. Benedict Catholic Church with Friar Mark Weaver officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th Street. The family asks in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions may be made to St. Benedict Catholic Church, 111 S. 9th St., Terre Haute, IN 47807. The family would also like to thank the staff of Springhill Village for their care of Josephine.
