John C. Wiggins

TERRE HAUTE — John C. Wiggins, 78, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 9:53 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital emergency room. He was born April 25, 1934, in Terre Haute.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James E. Surber and Mary L. Surber. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Marjorie R. Rhoden Wiggins; two sons, Michael R. Wiggins and his wife Darla, and Mark Wiggins, all of West Terre Haute; a brother, James L. Surber and his wife Darla of Terre Haute; eight grandchildren, John Wiggins and his wife Emily, Leigha Starkey and her companion Josh, Chad Wiggins and his wife Erica, Stephen Wiggins and his companion Ashley, Eugenia Garbutt and her husband Scott, Jeremy Wiggins, Cody Wiggins, and Bradley Wiggins; 12 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Dennis Taparo; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Neil Merritt; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by his sister, Judy Taparo.

John was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 133 in Terre Haute for many years. During his years as a carpenter he built a lot of the homes in the Woodridge Subdivision in Terre Haute. He then became a co-owner of the Overhead Door Company for over 20 years which he owned with his best friend Duwayne Ramsey. John loved being with his family and grandchildren. He spent many hours not only attending ball games and events  for his grandchildren but oftentimes videotaping those games and events. He enjoyed doing yard work at their home, and woodworking. He was a member of the West Terre Haute Masonic Lodge 687 Free and Accepted Masons, and the Kerman Grotto.

John’s funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. Third St., in West Terre Haute, with the Rev. Steve Moore officiating. Burial will be in Bethesda Memorial Park. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time Tuesday. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to Bethany United Church of Christ with envelopes available in the funeral home.
