TERRE HAUTE —
Charles Henry Cooper, born Sept. 20, 1947, in Terre Haute, painlessly passed through the mystic veil with family at his side at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at I.U. Health Hospice House in Bloomington, Ind.
A writer, poet, and musician with an eclectic, spiritual, and mystical nature, Charles loved life, people, and learning throughout his journey. As an avid reader and lover of books, he spent much of his free time at the original Nations Bookstore and Campbell’s bookstore. Terre Haute was his home until the last 10 years, when he made Bloomington, Ind., his new home. Active in the community both physically and spiritually, he played a vital role in the petitioning and creation of the “People’s Park” located on the corner of Kirkwood and Dunn streets in downtown Bloomington. Over the years, he was involved with the Anti-War and Peace Coalition, along with many other social issues.
Charles graduated from Wiley high School in 1965. While attending high school, he ran for the track team and played in the marching band. Also during this time, he was a drummer in a local Rock and Roll and Surf band called the Makahas. Besides playing for area high schools, the band began playing at early Bohemian style coffee shops, such as the “Loft” and the “Tin Ear,” as well as weekly dance parties at South Lake. After high school he attended classes at Indiana State College for more than two years. Later on this campus he would be introduced to his future wife, Bettie Jean Wood, who was a freshman.
He is preceded in death by his loving mother, Mary Francis (Oelgeschlager) Cooper, and his father, Floyd Alvin Cooper. He is survived by his son, Bradley Floyd Cooper and daughter-in-law, Melissa Ann Cooper. Also surviving are: a “special” niece, Andrea Nicole Molina and husband Thomas Molina; a “special” nephew, Sean Eric Mason and wife Dana Mason; a “special” great-niece, Cesya Lucinne Heine; a “special” great-nephew, Trenton Montague-Griffin Molina; and a forever friend, Bettie Jean (Wood) Cooper.
A memorial service will be given in his honor on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 1875 S. Fruitridge Ave., with visitation beginning at 1 p.m., and service at 2 p.m. The Rev. Doddie Stone will officiate. Charles was a longtime “friend” of the Congregation before moving to Bloomington. After making his home in Bloomington, he attended as a “friend” at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington before his illness.
If so desired, donations can be made to I.U. Health Hospice House in Bloomington, Ind., or to the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Terre Haute, Ind. Special thanks of appreciation go out to all of those involved in his care during the last days of his life. Condolences can be made to his family online at:
