TERRE HAUTE —
Frederick Walters Ervin, 75, of Terre Haute, died Saturday morning, November 24, 2012. He was born October 13, 1937 in Terre Haute to Alberta Schnell Ervin and William C. Ervin. Fred was employed for more than 35 years by the Indiana Work Force Development Agency in the Terre Haute area.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Joan Baumann Ervin of Indianapolis; a niece, Catherine Costlow of Fort Collins, Colorado; and a nephew, Bryan Ervin of Littleton, Colorado.
Fred was a graduate of Wiley High School, class of 1955, attended Butler University and graduated from Indiana State University. He was a veteran who served in the United States Army towards the end of the Korean War, in 1957 and 1958. An accomplished bridge player, Fred often received the Men’s Player of the Year Award at the Bridge Club of Terre Haute. He won a number of sectional and regional bridge sessions and placed in several National Bridge Tournaments with a variety of partners, mostly from the Terre Haute area, including his mother, Alberta. He achieved the Gold Life Master Status in bridge and also developed high level skills at chess. For many years Fred provided unstinting care for his mother. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 31 years.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, November 29, 2012 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, with Reverend Joseph H. Chillington officiating. Burial will be in Highland Lawn Cemetery with Military Graveside Honors provided by VFW Post #972. Visitation will take place prior to services on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.in the funeral home. Recently, in a moment of wry lucidity, Fred requested that, if he should die, in lieu of flowers, contributions to the Bridge Club of Terre Haute, 303 South 14th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47807 or Alcoholics Anonymous of the Wabash Valley, 605 Ohio Street, Terre Haute, IN 47807 would be most welcome.
