Lucille Marie Kates

TERRE HAUTE — Lucille Marie Kates, 90, of Terre Haute died peacefully Saturday, November 17, 2012, at home with her loving family at her side. She was born March 19, 1922, in Pacific Junction, IA, to Gene Richardson and Katie Curtis Richardson. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Henry Kates.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy O’Neal; two sons, Rod Kates and his wife Kathleen, and Mike Kates and his wife Lori; Eight grandchildren, Brian O’Neal, Lori Higginbotham and her husband Curt, Pam Ellis, Jennifer Rollins and her husband Harold, Jeff Kates and his wife Debbie, Amy Reising and her husband Joe, Marideth Kates, and Chris Kates and his wife Marcella; Twelve great-grandchildren, Craig and Connor O’Neal, Katie and Jake Higginbotham, Kevin, Megan and Brenna Ellis, Zack and Chance Rollins, Matt and Jon Reising and Scarlett Kates; and several nieces and nephews. Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Claude Richardson and his wife Dorothy; three sisters, Mary Kates, Patricia Wilson and Mae Yvonne Isles; a son, Kenneth Kates and his wife Cindy; a son-in-law, Loren O’Neal; and a granddaughter, Heather Marie Kates.

Lucille married Henry Kates on April 20, 1940, and they started their family in Pacific Junction, IA, and eventually moved to Terre Haute. Lucille was a stay at home mother who dedicated herself to raising her four children. Her entire life was intertwined with the lives of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren where she was viewed at the matriarch of her family. She loved her family unconditionally and was always there when we needed her most, to support, to listen, to mentor and to ensure each of her family members knew how much they were loved.

The family wishes to sincerely thank our mother and father’s dear, loyal and loving friend, Sr. Dorothy Rasche, SP, who always loved our parents and was always there to help guide them toward the eternal life they will now enjoy together. Lucille’s family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Mardini, who she loved and trusted, and to all of his staff for their devotion to our mother. A special thank you to Stacey, our mother’s hospice nurse, and to all the staff at Vista Care Hospice who personally cared so much for her, and also provided her with excellent end of life care in her home.

Private services will be conducted Wednesday, November 21, 2012, in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th Street with Friar Mark Weaver and Sister Dorothy Rasche officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Public visitation is scheduled from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 21, 2012, in the funeral home.

The family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Vista Care Hospice, 3401 S. 4th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47802, or to Connecting Link, 830 W. National Avenue, West Terre Haute, IN 47885 (a ministry outreach program of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods).
