Joseph W. ‘Bill’ Samm

TERRE HAUTE — Joseph W. “Bill” Samm, 90, of Terre Haute, passed away at 8:04 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, in Union Hospital at Terre Haute. He retired as a supervisor for Amoco Oil Company after 36 years of service. He was born Aug. 15, 1922, in Coalmont, to Clarence D. Samm and Edith Smith Samm.

 Survivors include his wife, Rose J. Foradori Scott; a daughter, Brenda Samm of Indianapolis; five sons, William Joseph Samm of Vincennes, Clarence C. “Buck” Samm and his wife Linda of Florida, Michael B. “Bruce” Samm, Kevin D. Samm and his wife Melanie, and Keith E. Samm, all of Indianapolis; six stepchildren, Dr. John R. Scott and his wife Gloria of Indianapolis, Nancy Olson and her husband Don of Mishawaka, Daniel Scott of San Francisco, Rose Marie Scott and her husband, Michael Worrell of Terre Haute, Jean Ann Scott, and Maribeth Scott and her companion Greg Seger, all of Terre Haute; three sisters, Margaret Yazel, Wanita Monrovey, and Wanda Bickel; three brothers, Carl Samm, Jack Samm, and Larry Samm; six grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; several great-grandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Frieda Samm; his parents; a sister; three brothers; and a stepson, Phillip Scott.

 He was a member of  St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church in Terre Haute, a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during which he achieved the rank of staff sergeant and he also was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Jasonville.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, in St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Rick Ginther officiating and military rites provided by Vigo County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. 3rd St., in West Terre Haute. There will also be visitation prior to services Tuesday morning in the funeral home which friends are welcome to join the family for a prayer service at 10:20 a.m. followed by a procession to the church. Cremation has been scheduled following all services with burial of his ashes in Bethesda Memorial Park at a later date. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church or the charity of donor’s choice with envelopes available in the funeral home.
