  UPDATE 4: Deadly tornado roars through Oklahoma City suburb

  A monstrous tornado at least a half-mile wide roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, flattening entire neighborhoods and destroying an elementary school with a direct blow as children and teachers huddled against winds up to 200 mph. At least 51 people were killed, and officials said the death toll was expected to rise.

Esther M. Hedges

TERRE HAUTE —

Esther M. Hedges, 86, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully on the evening of Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at Royal Oaks Health Care & Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Terre Haute on June 3, 1926, the daughter of the late William and Esther (Smith) Osborn. She was united in marriage to Harry Hedges, who preceded her in death in 1956.

An extremely hardworking and dedicated woman, Esther retired from Indiana State University after working nearly 30 years in the library. She was a woman who was very generous, loving, strong and independent. Esther was a former member of Maplewood Christian Church, and had a love for animals, especially cats. She lived for her family members and loved them dearly. Esther’s memory will live on in the hearts of those she touched for generations to come.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Alice and husband Michael Noel of Herculaneum, Mo. She was the proud and loving MomMom of Jennifer and husband Michael Knox of Brownsburg, Laura and husband Jay Wilson of Gosport, and Eric Randall of Crest Hill, Ill. Esther also leaves behind her two great-grandchildren, Kasey Knox and Brooklynn Wilson; along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Esther was welcomed home to heaven by her brother, Robert Osborn.

Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, from 4 to 8 p.m., and again on Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, from 10 a.m. until Esther’s funeral ceremony at 11 a.m., at Roselawn Funeral Home. Pastor Don Osborn will officiate, with interment to follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions in memory of Esther may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Terre Haute Humane Society. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family online at:
