Edith M. Woodard

BLOOMINGDALE — Edith M. Woodard, 95, of Bloomingdale, died 12:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at her residence. She was an elementary school teacher who taught fourth grade at Montezuma Elementary School for most of her career. Before teaching there she taught at Owensville, Cynthiana, Judson and Bloomingdale. She was born Oct. 6, 1916, in Somerset, Ky., to the late John and Lula Mae Allen Whitely.

Her husband of 51 years, Vinton L. Woodard, whom she married Nov. 19, 1938, in Madison, Ind., died Feb. 25, 1990. Survivors include her daughter, Sue Woodard of Bloomingdale; daughter-in-law, Anita Woodard Mountcastle of Rockville; two granddaughters, Della Griffin and her husband Brady of Bloomingdale and Heidi Millspaugh and her husband John of Rockville; four great-grandchildren, Anna Griffin, Wyatt Griffin, Macy Millspaugh and Madison Millspaugh; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Robert L. Woodard; her sister, Edna Swaim; and her brother, John Edward Whitely.

She was a member of Harmony Church of Christ and Parke-Vermillion Retired Teachers’ Association. She graduated from Bloomingdale High School and Central Normal College. She later graduated from Indiana State University with her bachelor of science degree in elementary education. She enjoyed gardening, working in the yard and loved reading.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, in Gooch Funeral Home, 112 W. Howard St., in Rockville. Burial will follow in Bloomingdale Friends Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
