TERRE HAUTE —
Frances Tennis Burget, 73, of Avon, Indiana, and formerly of Terre Haute died Saturday morning November 3, 2012 in Hendricks County Regional Hospital in Danville, Indiana. She was a retired school teacher having taught English for 28 years in Carlisle, Indiana, Chauncey Rose Junior High School and Terre Haute North Vigo High School, where she was a former English Department Chairman. She was born January 11, 1939, in Sullivan, Indiana, to Wendell Tennis and Edna Kirkham Tennis. Her husband, John R. Burget, Jr., preceded her in death on March 2, 2004.
Survivors include her two daughters, Polly Knight and her husband, Brad, of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Anne Burget and her husband, Mike Clement, of Avon, Indiana; 5 grandchildren, Kala Morgan and her husband, Chris, Bradley Knight, Jason Johnson, Ryan Knight and Jasmine Clement; 2 great-grandchildren; 1 foster grandchild; a brother-in-law, Father Joel Burget, OFM Conv. of Terre Haute; two sisters-in-law, Sr. Ann Brendan Burget, SP of St. Mary-on-the-Woods, Indiana, and Sally Jones of Crystal Beach, Texas; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her son, John Joel Burget; her brother, William E. Tennis; and her mother and father-in-law, Mildred and John Burget, Sr.
Fran was a graduate of Sullivan High School and received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Indiana State University. She was a very active member of St. Benedict Catholic Church where she served as a Greeter, Lector, Commentator and Eucharistic Minister. She was a member of the Altar Society, was a volunteer with the Soup Kitchen and the church office for many years and served as chairman of the Hospitality Committee and chairman and secretary of the Board of Education. After her retirement from teaching, Fran volunteered at Union Hospital, St. Ann’s Clinic and at the Terre Haute Humane Shelter. She was a two-term president of Eta Phi Chapter of Psi Iota Sorority, a member of Vigo County Teacher’s Association, Indiana Council of Teachers of English, and served at First Lady of the Sycamore Club while her husband, John, was president.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, November 8, 2012 in St. Benedict Catholic Church with Father Ed Goldbach OFM Conv. and Father Joel Burget OFM Conv. concelebrating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
