---- — Helen LaVerne Scofield, 88, of Terre Haute, passed away at 9:26 a.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, in Union Hospital. She was born in Terre Haute on Aug. 26, 1922, to Clarence Burns and Anna Reynolds Burns. She married Jack Scofield on June 16, 1946, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 15, 1996. Also preceding her in death were three sisters, Althea Larison, Mildred Daugherty, and Delores Fagg. 

She is survived by two daughters, Jackie Seddelmeyer and husband John, and Nancy Geiger and husband Leonard; one brother, Bill Burns; one sister, Dorothy Allan; three grandchildren, Julia Vaughn and husband Jon, Jennifer Seddelmeyer, and Andrew Geiger; as well as two great-grandchildren, Taylor Vaughn and Brittany Vaughn. 

She attended Eighth Avenue Baptist Church, where she was one of the “back row church ladies” with her friend Vaunda. She was an avid Terre Haute North High School basketball fan and enjoyed watching and attending other sporting events. She enjoyed attending musicals and plays in which her granddaughters gave performances, and also was very proud of her grandson’s work in television, and enjoyed visiting with all her family at the family reunions. 

Funeral services will be at Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, with the Rev. Dick Smith officiating. Burial will be at Highland Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, at the funeral home. The family requests memorial contributions be made to either Eighth Avenue Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society, in her memory.
