William “Bill” Deighton

TERRE HAUTE — William “Bill” Deighton, of Terre Haute, passed away on Jan. 31, 2011, at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. Bill was born on May 16, 1919, in Terre Haute to Tom and Ethel (Cooke) Deighton. He married Norma Slaven in 1939 in Martinsville, Ind. and she preceded him in death in 2002. Bill served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked as a supervisor for Wabash Fibre Box Company. Bill and Norma built their own home, enjoyed traveling, dancing and bear hunting.

Bill is survived by his children, Thomas Deighton and wife Tess of Cleveland, Marilyn Deighton of Kempner, Texas, and Sandra Purdy and husband Sam of Terre Haute; grandchildren, William Christopher Deighton, Angelina Deighton, Steven Beard and wife Annette, and Debra Morford; great-grandchildren, Caitlin Keller, Dillon Beard, Breeanna and Abbigail Gurchiek; a brother, Donald Deighton; sister-in-law, Ann Thiede, and brother-in-law, John (Janet) Slaven; and several nieces and nephews and family friend, Robert Wesley.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma; sister, Vivian Burrell; brother, Bernard Deighton; brother-in-law, Albert Slaven; and sisters-in-law, Mildred Waldon and Alene Gerring.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4 at Thomas Funeral Home. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5 at the funeral home with the Rev. Jason Riggle officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park with military rites performed by VFW Post 972.
