TERRE HAUTE —
Robert “Ted” Laughrey, 77, of Terre Haute, passed away at 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Aug. 21, 2011, at Royal Oaks Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Jan. 20, 1934, in Staunton, to Robert W. Laughrey and Josephine Catterlin Laughrey
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Lockman Laughrey; one son, Ted Laughrey Jr.; three sisters, Shirley Vester, Carolyn Maxwell and Bonita Lu; six grandchildren, Lori Ann Fuller, Lindsay Daley, Gregory W. Laughrey II, Amanda Lynn Vermillion, Audrey Rose Laughrey, and Amber Marie Laughrey; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Gregory W. Laughrey.
He was former owner of Laughrey Brothers Roofing & Siding and later Laughrey & Son Roofing and Siding. He was a member of William Penn Lodge 727 Free & Accepted Masons, Zorah Shrine, Scottish Rite, past president of Local 150 Roofers & Waterproofers, He was a reserve deputy for both Vigo and Clay counties.
He was a large supporter of the Historical Carbon Baptist Church, in Carbon. He sang gospel music in many local churches. He was a square dance caller and instructor for 45 years. He was club caller for the Promenaders in Terre Haute, the Butterfly Twirlers in Blandford, Town & Country in Paris, and The Moderne Swingers in Greencastle. He also called for many other clubs, Swinging Mates in Terre Haute, Charleston, Ill., Indianapolis, Bloomington, Linton, Marshall, Ill., Clinton’s Little Italy Festival, Covington, Rockville, Crawfordsville, Georgetown, Ill., Veedersburg, California, Arizona, Oklahoma, Des Moines, Iowa, Kentucky, Florida, Springfield, Ill., and Tangier. But of all his accomplishments, his family was first in his life.
Services will be Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, at 1 p.m. in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, 4660 Lafayette Ave., with the Rev. Steve Moore officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with Masonic services at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
