TERRE HAUTE —
Harry Frederick Wunker Jr., 85, of Springfield, IL, and formerly of Terre Haute died Sunday morning, July 22, 2012, in his residence. He was a school teacher and former Chairman of the Science Department at Terre Haute North Vigo High School. Harry was born July 6, 1927, in Terre Haute, to Harry Frederick Wunker, Sr. and Sue Anna Bollinger Wunker. His wife of 51 years, Milna Taylor Wunker, preceded him in death on August 10, 2005.
Survivors include his son, Dr. Frederick Wunker of Chicago, IL; a brother-in-law, Thomas Taylor of Rockville, IN; two sisters-in law, Mary Geiger of Palm Coast, FL and Margaret Taylor of Lebanon, IN; and several nieces and nephews.
Harry was a 1945 graduate of Wiley High School and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Indiana State University. He also studied advanced graduate work in Science Supervision and Administration at Indiana University and Florida State University. Harry served in the Army of Occupation in Germany in 1947, as well as three years in the Indiana National Guard and six years in the Active Army Reserve.
He began his teaching career in 1950 in Lagrange County, Ind., and returned to Vigo County in 1952 teaching at Glenn High School and McLean Junior High School. In 1957 he was named Chairman of the Science Department at Garfield High School and remained in that position until its’ closing in 1972. He then was named Chairman of the Science Department at Terre Haute North Vigo High School and served in that position until his retirement in 1992. Harry also taught at the Terre Haute Federal Penitentiary and in his later years continued working by teaching homebound students.
During his career, Harry was Director of the West Central Regional Science Fair from 1980 - 1993, and in 1997 he was co-director of the Hoosier State Science Fair. Additionally, he served a three year term on the Advisory Council of the International Science and Engineering Fair. Harry was honored as a member of Phi Delta Kappa in 1958; Terre Haute’s Outstanding Young Man in 1961; State of Indiana Outstanding Biology Teacher in 1965; and Legion of Honor, Order of DeMolay in 1966. He was a member of Terre Haute Lodge #86 F & AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, Zorah Shrine, Vigo County Retired Teacher’s Association and Wayne Newton American Legion Post #346.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 27, 2012 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, with Reverend Steve Moore officiating. Burial will take place in Highland Lawn Cemetery with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post #346. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, July 26th from 5:00-7:00 P.M. with a Masonic Memorial Service to take place at 7:00 P.M. in the funeral home.
