TERRE HAUTE — Sister Beth Kelso, 96, died at 4:17 a.m. on Sept. 23, 2012, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born Feb. 29, 1916, in Chicago, to Joseph R. and Florine Carroll Kelso, and was baptized Elizabeth Carroll.

Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 12, 1936, and was given the name Sr. Thomas Aquinas. She professed first vows Aug. 15, 1938, and final vows Aug. 15, 1944. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, a master’s degree in Latin from Loyola University and a master’s degree in Spanish from Indiana University. In her 76 years as a Sister of Providence, Sister ministered as teacher for 30 years in high schools in Indiana, Illinois, California, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C. In 1969, she joined the faculty of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. Retiring from teaching in 1987, she served as registrar at Mother Theodore Guerin High School in Illinois for 14 years. In 2002, she moved to the Motherhouse where she continued to give service to her sisters. Beginning in 2009, she dedicated herself totally to the ministry of prayer.

Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by a sister, Lorraine Kelso Novy.

The wake is Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian burial is Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at 11 a.m., in the church, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Providence or St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.
