ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS —
Sister Jean Michele Monaghan died at 12:14 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born on July 10, 1919, in Indianapolis, to Martin and Ellen Sharkey Monaghan and was baptized Mary Jean.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Sept. 12, 1963, and was given the name Sr. John Michele. She professed Final Vows Aug. 15, 1969. Of her 49 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered for 31 years in administrative positions both in Indiana and California. For her last 17 years of active ministry, she served in the school and parish of St. Elizabeth in Van Nuys, Calif. In 1999 she returned to the motherhouse, where she contributed to community life in a variety of ways. Beginning in 2002, she gave herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward F. Monaghan and Raymond J. Monaghan.
The wake is on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial is Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
