TERRE HAUTE —
Stella Inez Smith died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, in New Albany, Ind. She was born May 30, 1915, in Chrisman, Ill., to Herman W. Smith and Ruby C. Daily Smith.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Nancy Anne; her brothers, Eugene and John; and her sisters, Helen York and Kathryn. She was married to Wayne C. Smith, who also is deceased.
She is survived by her daughter, K. Patricia Bitts Johnson (Bob), Terre Haute; her sons, Brian W. Smith (Tam), Saigon, Vietnam; Terry E. Smith (Maryanne), Sellersburg, Ind.; Bruce A. Smith (Lora), Evansville, Ind.; and Randy L. Smith (Paula), Grand Rapids, Mich.; her brother, Bob (Jean), Terre Haute; 17 grandchildren, Arthur W. Bitts (Amy), Whiteland, Ind.; Nancy Hopper (Mike), Norfolk, Va.; Daniel Bitts (Cathy), Baltimore, Md.; Marta Waddell (Victor), California; Krista Smith Alsayari (Omair), Swansea, Ill.; Amy Mize (Brian), Lansing, Kan.; Amber Tracy (Stuart), Terre Haute; Stella Smith and Jacob Smith, Saigon, Vietnam; Terry E. Smith, Grand Junction, Colo.; Cara Nasser (James), Terre Haute; Matthew Smith, Chicago; Stephen Smith (Rachel), Fort Thomas, Ky.; Ashley Kinner (Chad), Indianapolis; Haley Smith, Indianapolis; Nathan Smith, Evansville; and Evan Smith, Evansville; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Stella graduated from Wiley High School, attended the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, where she lived for six years before returning to Terre Haute. She retired from Columbia Records in 1980 after 17 years in the office.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, 2200 N. 13th St. Services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, at the funeral home, with Pastor Craig Wininger officiating.
