Melvin ‘Dean’ Kays

TERRE HAUTE — Melvin “Dean” Kays, of Terre Haute went home to be with the lord on Oct. 11, 2012, in Union Hospital. He was born Jan. 6, 1936, in Washington, Ind. to Buel T. and J. Evelyn Kays of Washington.

Survivors include his wife Patty L. Kays (Bennington); one brother, Ronald R. Kays and wife Genrose of Indianapolis; one sister, Jane Ann Johnson and husband Jim of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son Michael D. Kays, who died Sept. 18, 1984. He was retired from the Federal Aviation Administration, Hulman Regional airport, Terre Haute, where he worked in Flight Service as a weather briefer and as an instructor of weather systems and their effects on the flights of aircraft for general and military aircraft. He also retired from the United States Navy as a Master Chief Operations Specialist, where he served aboard the USS Putnam DD-757, USS Stickell DDR-888, USS Interpid CVS-11 involved in the Apollo, and Gemini space program, USS Saratoga CVA- 60, and USS Forrestal CV-59, where he was lead air intercept controller and operations and electronics department chief. He was an instructor at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, where he taught electricity, electronics and combat operations. He retired as the Chief Navy Recruiter for the state of Indiana with 26 recruiting stations within the state and 87 recruiters. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Assoc. Branch 377. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church where he served as head usher, former Assistant Treasurer and was the financial secretary of the church and Terre Haute Christian School. He was an avid bowler with several perfect games and an 844, 3 game series and he also loved the game of golf.

Services will be at DeBaun Springhill Chapel Funeral Home. Visitation is from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with funeral  services at 5 p.m., with the Rev. Bob Parker Officiating. Military rites will be performed by VFW Post 972 in the funeral home. Burial is in Oak Grove Cemetery, Washington. The family requests memorial contributions be made to either the American Heart Association, or the American Diabetes Association, in his memory. Online condolences may be left at:
