WEST TERRE HAUTE —
James E. “Jay” Pfleging, 66, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 5:44 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He retired as a plumber from the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 157 at Terre Haute after 35 years of service, during which he had been employed with several local contractors beginning working with his father, Jay E. Pfleging Plumbing, Williams Plumbing, and most recently with Sycamore Engineering. He was born Dec. 22, 1945, in Terre Haute, to James E. Pfleging and Florence Stanley Pfleging.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Mary Ann Bedel Pfleging; three children, Mary Katherine “Katie” Doll and her husband Travis of Rushville, James E. “Jay” Pfleging III of Anderson, and Sarah Elizabeth Pfleging of West Terre Haute; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Janet and Dave Hasley of Leicester, N.Y., and Mary Beth and Carl Dougherty of Terre Haute; a brother, Bruce Pfleging of Michigan; three grandchildren, Renee Doll, Levi Doll, and Gracie Doll; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jay was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a longtime member of the former St. Leonard’s Catholic Church in West Terre Haute, a member of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Village Catholic Church, AMVETS, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6574 in West Terre Haute. He enjoyed volunteering at the Providence Food Pantry in West Terre Haute.
Mass of Christian burial will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, in the Village Church with Father Bernard Head officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Vigo County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. Third St., in West Terre Haute, with a prayer service at 12:30 p.m. followed by procession to the church. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to Providence Food Pantry with envelopes available in the funeral home.
