Dorothy L. Albin


Dorothy L. Albin, of Black Lick, Ohio, and formerly of Columbus, Ohio, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, in Porter Hospital-Valparaiso. She was a customer-service representative with Blockbuster Video.

She was born March 20, 1920, in Dover, Del., to Louis Hayek and Mary Margaret Morris. Survivors include her daughter, Christina McMahon and her husband James of Chesterton; a son, Fred Albin and his wife Shelley of Pataskala, Ohio; five grandchildren, Tori Schneider, Heather James, Everett Albin, Andrew Albin and Cassie Albin; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Albin, in 1996; and her parents.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, in St. Andrew Episcopal Church in Pickerington, Ohio, with a reception to follow the service. Burial will take place in the Vigo County area. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to St. Andrew Episcopal Church. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of White-Love Funeral Home in Chesterton.

Mary Belle Lindsey Hedden

Mary Belle Lindsey Hedden, 76, of West Terre Haute went to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 20, 2006. She had retired from both the Modern Album in Terre Haute and later as a teacher’s aide from the Vigo County School Corp.

She was born Oct. 22, 1929, in West Terre Haute, to Harry Lindsey and Beulah Cook Lindsey. Her husband, Russell Hedden, whom she married Nov. 5, 1947, in West Terre Haute, preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 1995. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Belle and Jerry Richardson of Dana; two sons and daughters-in-law, Carl Madison Hedden and Ester Hedden of Terre Haute, and Stanley Victor Hedden Sr. and Linda Hedden of Decatur, Ill.; a brother, Joseph Lindsey of Dana, formerly of West Terre Haute; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and many other relatives in the Marshall, Ill., and West Terre Haute areas. She was preceded in death by a son, Jacob Russell Hedden; a great-granddaughter, Courtney Richardson; and a brother, Frank Lindsey.

She was a member of Eighth Street Wesleyan Church in West Terre Haute and Sandford Wesleyan Church, where she also played the piano.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kenneth Hedden officiating. Burial will be in Bethesda Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. until services Tuesday.

Herbert Wayne Lambert Sr.

On Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, heaven was blessed with the arrival of Herbert Wayne Lambert Sr., 60, of Terre Haute and formerly of West Terre Haute. He went to be be with the Lord after complications that arose from surgery.

He was born March 14, 1945, to Grant and Mary Lambert of West Terre Haute. He graduated in 1964 from West Vigo High School. He married Dorothy May Laycock of West Terre Haute in 1967. He retired from Pittman-Moore in Terre Haute in 1993 after 21 years of service. He was the former owner of the 8 Ball Cafe and the Big Sticks Pool Hall, both in West Terre Haute.

He was the beloved father of Herbert Wayne Lambert Jr. and his wife, Jamie Lynn Lambert, of Martinsville, Ill., formerly of West Terre Haute, and Brittany Ayn Haney of West Terre Haute, who survive him. Other survivors include grandchildren, Mackenz Lee Lambert, Hayden Dax Lambert and one on the way; four sisters, Theresa Walker of Terre Haute, Virginia Pershing of West Terre Haute, Rosemary Poppe and her husband James of Indianapolis, and Margaret Deckard and her husband Jim of Brazil; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Minnich; and two brothers, Charles Hughey and James Lambert.

Services are noon Monday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerry Bollinger officiating. Burial will be in Bethesda Memorial Park. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and prior to services Monday.

James Ray Singer Sr.

James Ray Singer Sr., 70, died at 2:32 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

He was born Feb. 16, 1935, in Cincinnati to Verl Ray and Verna Clingerman Singer. Following graduation from Ashboro High School, he worked 14 years at Quaker Maid, was self-employed as a logger and worked at Peabody Coal Company at their Universal Mine until retirement. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.

He married Wilma Jean Biddle on July 30, 1990, in Terre Haute. He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Jean Marie Bowling and her husband, Gordon of Brazil; three sons, James Ray Singer II and wife, Kris, Jay Lawrence Singer and his wife, Robin, and Jeffrey Lee Singer, all of Brazil; one stepdaughter, Linda Jean Lippo and her husband, Joe of St. Augustine, Fla.; a half-sister, Nancy Lee Feak of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Lawrence James Roberts; an infant son, Jerry Allens Singer; and one stepson, James Ray Cooper Jr.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in Moore Funeral Home. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial will follow in Clearview Cemetery.

Sister Joan (Joan Elizabeth) Tekulve

Sister Joan, also known as Sister Gregory Ann of St. Mary-of-the Woods died at 5:41 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, in Mother Theodore Hall in St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was an educator in elementary and secondary schools and in business administration. She taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of Providence in Indiana, Illinois, District of Columbia and Missouri, including Schulte High School in Terre Haute.

Of her 57 years as a Sister of Providence, she spent 18 years as a teacher and 11 years in the business office of St. Mary-of-the Woods College as business administrator, director of gerontology and WED instructor. From 1983-1989, she was chaplain in Community Hospital in Indianapolis, and from 1997-2003 she ministered in the Providence Center Gift Shop at St. Mary-of-the-Woods as assistant manager.

The former Joan Elizabeth Tekulve was born Nov. 5, 1929, in Plymouth to George Tekulve and Clara Bischoff Tekulve. Survivors include many nieces and nephews; one brother, Paul E. Tekulve of Indianapolis; and one sister-in-law, Luana Tekulve of Philomath, Ore. She was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas C. Tekulve.

She attended grade school at St. Francis de Sales and high school at St. John Academy, both in Indianapolis. She graduated from St. Mary-of-the Woods College with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, obtained her master’s degree in business education from Indiana State University, and her master’s degree in pastoral theology from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. She entered the congregation of the Sisters of Providence Feb. 14, 1948, professed First Vows Aug. 15, 1950, and Final Vows Aug. 15, 1955.

Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus officiating. Burial is in the Cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Wake is 2:30 p.m. Monday in the church, with Wake Service at 4:30. Callahan Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Elizabeth Susan ‘Betty’ Clark


MARSHALL, Ill. – Elizabeth Susan “Betty” Clark, 79, of Marshall died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, in Burnsides Nursing Home. She worked for many years in Marshall elementary schools as a teacher’s aide.

She was born July 18, 1926, to Robert and Mary Forbeck Smitley. On Oct. 4, 1947, she married Eugene R. Clark, and they had five children together.

She loved all children, children’s books, her collie dogs and horses, and watching her grandchildren play sports. Betty and Gene operated the boat dock and concessions at Lincoln Trail State Park for many years. She always had a smile on her face and a friendly hello.

She was a loving mother and grandmother. She will be sadly missed by her children, Penny Cannady and her husband, Ken of Marshall, Debbie Quick and her husband, Steve of Watseka, Mark Clark and his wife, Diane of Marshall, Mindy Harper and her husband, Bryan of Marshall, Tammy Fraker and her husband, Bill of Marshall; grandchildren, Shawn Stover, Sara Tingley, Jason Clark, Jared Clark, Jeremy Harper, Nathan Harper, Caleb McNary, Blaine Fraker and Courtney Fraker, all of Marshall, Joshua Quick of Robinson, Jacob Quick of Watseka and Megan Baxter of Bloomington; great-grandchildren, Britni Kastigar, Sydni Stover, Elijah Stover, Wesley Tingley, Macy Clark, Mya Clark, Kannon Clark, Conner Littleton, Madison Murphy, Ethan Harper and Saige Harper, all of Marshall, Jessica Quick, Ian Quick, Samuel Quick and Joseph Quick of Robinson, and Aden Quick of Watseka; two sisters, Ida Athey of Terre Haute, Ind., and Dorothy Altmeyer of Marshall; and a brother, Richard Smitley of Marshall. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gene; brothers, Rob, Joe, Don and Bill Smitley; and sisters, Mary Jane Mott, Edythe Turner and Patricia White.

Funeral services are noon CST today in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marshall, with the Rev. Chris Brey officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation is 10 a.m. to services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Marshall Public Library or to the Marshall Schools Foundation. Pearce Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Winifred Ella Hutchens

MARSHALL, Ill. – Winifred Ella Hutchens, 89, of Marshall, died at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, in Burnsides Nursing Home.

She was born Oct. 31, 1916, in Flat Rock, Ill., to Arnott “Red” Irwin and Della Wagoner Irwin. She married Edgar Dean Hutchens on Aug. 2, 1958, and he preceded her in death on June 16, 1992.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, K. Linda and Les Peshia of Columbus, Ohio; three grandchildren, Eric Garrard of Indianapolis, Robin Michelle Clark of Carson City, Nev., and Alexandra Lorane Peshia of Columbus; a great-grandchild, Chloe Elizabeth Clark; and a sister-in-law, Pauline Bandy of Marshall. A son, LeRoy Arnott Garrard, preceded her in death.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Marshall and Ladies of the Moose in Robinson.

Funeral services are 1:30 p.m. CST Sunday in Pearce Funeral Home with the Rev. David Deal officiating. Burial will be in Marshall Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today and 7 a.m. until services Sunday in the funeral home.

Andrew Rambis Jr.

SHELBURN – Andrew Rambis, Jr., 80, of Muncie, and formerly of Shelburn, died Thursday evening, Jan. 19, 2006, in Ball Memorial Hospital. He was employed at Warner Gear for thirty years prior to his retirement in 1978.

He was born April 24, 1925, in Shelburn to Andrew Joe and Agnes Wilk Rambis, and graduated from Sullivan High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1944 to 1946. Following the service, he attended Ball State University where he was a member of the football team. He was an avid pilot, boater and motorcyclist who enjoyed the outdoors.

Surviving are his wife, Alice Rathel Rambis, to whom he had been married 32 years; five brothers, Joe Rambis of Washington, Albert Rambis and his wife, Barbara of Skokie, Ill., Stanley Rambis and his wife, Ursula of Sparta, Wis., Mike Rambis and his wife, Becky of California, and William Rambis and his wife, Myrna of Anderson; two sisters, Mary Owen and her husband, Cliff of Auburn, Wash., and Sophia Bolinger of Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Parson Mortuary in Muncie. Burial will follow in Thompson Cemetery, near Gaston, with military rites by the Delaware County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday and an hour prior to the services on Monday at the funeral. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Allen Rollins

FAIRVIEW – Allen “Al” Rollins, 57, died in his residence Thursday afternoon, Jan. 19, 2006. He was a maintenance supervisor for South Vermillion School Corp., where he worked for 24 years.

He was born Oct. 5, 1948, in Clinton, to Eleanor Kelley Rollins and Harold Rollins. He was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Universal, Isaac Walton League and was a former member of the Jaycees, Fairview Fire Department, Clinton Lions Club, and was parade chairman for the Little Italy Festival for many years. He also drove the bus for several athletic events and videotaped many school events.

Survivors include three sisters, Janet Upp and her husband Donnie of Centerpoint, Elaine Vitaniemi and her husband Rusty of Clinton, and Kathy Rollins VanHuss and her husband Mike; one brother, Steve Rollins of Elkhart; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Larry Rollins; and one sister, Margaret Thomas.

Service are 1 p.m. Monday in the South Vermillion High School auditorium. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Frist Funeral Home, with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Al Rollins Athletic Scholarship Fund with envelopes available in the funeral home.
