Rita J. Kendall

Rita J. Kendall, 83, of Terre Haute, passed away at 10:59 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, in her residence. Rita retired in 1994 as the superintendent for Highland Lawn

Cemetery, where she had been instrumental in restoring the chapel and the bell tower and also getting the cemetery on the National Historic Register. She was born May 5, 1929, in Monroe, Mich., to Arthur J. Bramble and Ann (Kelty) Bramble.

Rita is survived by her daughters, Jean McCleary and husband Daryl of Terre Haute, Anita Snyder and husband Lennie of Terre Haute, and Veronica Stull of Kent, Wash.; sons, Mark Kendall and wife Janet of Greeley, Colo., John “Jack” Kendall and wife Karen of Corpus Christi, Texas, and David Kendall of Bloomington, Ind.; grandchildren, Adam and Annie Kendall, Sarah and Nate Snyder, Rachel and Paul McCleary, and Katie and Kenneth Stull; great-grandchildren, Reece and Dylann McCleary; brothers, William “Bill” Bramble and Robert “Bob” Bramble, both of Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John G. “Jack” Kendall, who died in 1997; and brothers, Earl Bramble, Joe Bramble, and Jack Bramble; and sisters, Florence “Cissie” Williams and Virginia Bramble.

Rita received a Sagamore of the Wabash from Governor Evan Bayh and she also received a Distinguished Hoosier award. Memberships included, Lawton-Byrum Post 972 Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Post 104 Ladies Auxiliary, Voiture 21 of 40 & 8 LeFemmes, Joseph A. Bray Detachment of Marine Corps League Association, Harry S. Truman Club, and the Democrat Club.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, from 4 until 7:30 p.m. in Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with funeral services at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home with Friar Mark Weaver officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Highland Lawn Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Wabash Valley or the Silent Men.
