Delilla S. Brown

CLAY COUNTY — Delilla S. Brown, 69, of Clay County, passed away, Feb. 20, 2013, at Union Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born July 30, 1943, in Clay County, the daughter of Richard and Ernestine (Moon) Boyce.

She graduated from Van Buren High School with the class of 1961 and graduated from Indiana Central College in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in education. Shortly thereafter, she earned a master’s degree in education and had begun working on earning a doctorate. Following college, Delilla taught at Clay City High School for five years before entering the mission field in Harlan, Ky., as a teacher with Red Bird Mission. Delilla went on to teach with Clay Community School Corporation for 33 years and retired in 2010.  

On Dec. 15, 1972, she married John Brown. Delilla was a devoted member of Prairie City United Methodist Church, where she served as lay leader for many years. When she was not spending time with church duties she loved spending time with her grandchildren or reading.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Ernestine Boyce. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, John Brown; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jason Brown and wife Tiffany and Garth Brown and wife Sara of Brazil; grandchildren, Madalynn Brown, Grady Brown, Avery Brown, Sydni Brown, and one on the way; a brother, Richard “Dick” Boyce and wife Laura, all of Clay County; as well as several extended family members and friends.

Friends and family are welcome to gather at Lawson-Miller Chapel, Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, from 3 to 6 p.m. Services will be at the funeral home Saturday at 6 p.m. At her request, cremation services will be provided. In lieu of flowers donations, may be made to Clay County Cooperative Benevolence Ministry, 120 West Jackson St., Apt. 121, Brazil, IN 47834 or Prairie City United Methodist, Church P.O. Box 3
