Dr. Joan Arbuckle Fuelle passed away peacefully, Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at Cobblestone Crossings Health Center in Terre Haute. She was born on July 26, 1937, in Paris, Ill., and was the only child of Chester and Evelyn (Ewing) Arbuckle. In 1958, she graduated from Indiana State Teachers College with a B.S. in Physical Education/Vocal Music. In 1967, she completed her M.S. in Psychology from Indiana State University and obtained certification in Elementary Education in 1970. She taught Physical Education and was an elementary school teacher in Vigo County schools from the mid-1960s to mid-1970s. Upon completing her Ph.D. in Guidance and Psychological Services from Indiana State University in 1981, Joan embarked on a career in counseling, counselor education, and management in Terre Haute, Indianapolis, and Louisville, Ky. She retired from Hamilton Center in Terre Haute in December 1999. She was a past board member of Arts Illiana and Family Service Association in Terre Haute. She was past president of the Indiana Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and chaired the state conference for IAMFT in 1988 and 1989. She had a beautiful soprano voice and sang with the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, the Terre Haute Choral Society, various church choirs in Indianapolis, Louisville, and Terre Haute, including the churches of St. Ann and St. Margaret Mary. She enjoyed playing tennis at clubs and in tournaments for many years, especially doubles with her daughter, Susan.
She is survived by her children, Susan Tingley and husband Michael, Kathy Steiner, Daniel Fuelle and wife Bonnie, and Thomas Fuelle and wife Brenda. She also is survived by her grandchildren, Ryan Conner, Kerstin Steiner, Nick Steiner, Alex Steiner, Marcus Steiner, BrandyGail Mattox, Elise Iocoangeli, Lucy Fuelle, Evi Fuelle, Annie Fuelle, and Elaan Greenfield; as well as three great-grandchildren. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; and infant daughter, Mary Fuelle.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has been chosen, with a celebration of her life to follow at a later date.
