Mickenzie Lee Nevins

TERRE HAUTE — Mickenzie Lee Nevins, 20, of Terre Haute, passed away at 5:35 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, 2013, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital, due to complications as a result of a lifelong illness with Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy. He was a student at Terre Haute South Vigo High School. Mickenzie was born Nov. 2, 1992, in Terre Haute.

Survivors include his mother, Judith K. Nevins and her companion, Michael J.  Barnhart, who Mickenzie referred to as Dad; his father, Jeffrey B. Scarbrough; two brothers, Jacob McDaniel of Terre Haute, and Mikey McDaniel of Fontanet; six sisters, Alana and Cassie Scarbrough of Farmersburg, Shannon Stephens of Rosedale, Kathy McDaniel of Colorado, Lesia Duke of Villa Grove, Ill., and Ashley McDaniel of Fontanet; his maternal grandparents, Lois Strain, and James and Lorena Nevins; his paternal grandmother, Virginia Tomey; three uncles, Lee, Jack, and Kenny Nevins of Terre Haute; an aunt, Carolyn Luke of Illinois; cousins, Mikey Elkins and Brandi Watson of Illinois; lifelong friends, the Dailey family, Mary Higginbotham and her companion Jesse Davis, Jeffrey Strain Jr., Savana Strain, Rheana Strain, Alice Fagg and Elsie Beard, all of Terre Haute.

He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandmother, Elnora Wyndham; maternal grandfather, PawPaw Bill Moore; paternal grandfather, Mickey P. Scarbrough; paternal great-grandmother, Edna Virginia Scarbrough; and an uncle, Ben Nevins.

Mickenzie has been an active student since beginning school on Nov. 3, 1995. School was one of the many things that he enjoyed and seeing all of his friends at school really meant a lot to him. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR races and seeing his favorite driver, Dale Earnhart Jr. race, watching football games, and playing Xbox 360 and Play Station 3.

A celebration of life for Mickenzie will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, in the Terre Haute South Vigo High School library for all friends and family to attend, reminisce, share stories and celebrate his life. The family suggests that if friends so desire, any contributions, cards, letters, etceteras may be sent to Mickenzie Nevins at P.O. Box 84; Praireton, IN 47870. Fitzpatrick Funeral Home of West Terre Haute assisted with arrangements.
