CROTHERSVILLE —
James R. “Jim” Stewart, 73, passed away at his home on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013. Jim was born in Crothersville, on June 16, 1939, to Orris and Mae (Lowery) Stewart, who both have preceded him in death. Jim was a 1957 graduate of Crothersville High School, a 1963 graduate of Franklin College, and 1970 graduate of Ball State, achieving his master’s degree in education.
On June 17, 1962, Jim married Shirley McCalla, who survives in Crothersville. Jim was a retired high school principal and basketball coach. Jim was a member of First Baptist Church of Crothersville, Retired Teachers Association of Jackson County, and former board member of Jackson County Red Cross. Jim loved life, his family and spending time in Florida with his wife Shirley. He enjoyed coaching, bowling, boating, water skiing, playing cards, going to dirt car races, drinking coffee with his friends, and watching “Bonanza” and “Gunsmoke.”
Jim started teaching in 1963 and taught through 1986. He was vice principal for five years, 13 years as principal and 43 total years combined as a basketball coach. Jim was a teacher/coach at the following schools: Whitestown High School, Windfall High School, Jimtown High School, Corydon High School, serving also as athletic director, Clinton Central High School, Hauser High School; Rosedale High School serving as athletic director, coach and teacher; Cloverdale, vice principal, serving as athletic director and coach; Monroe Central High School serving as vice principal and coach; Tri West High School serving as vice principal and athletic director, Medora High School, serving as principal and coach. Jim was the basketball coach from 2003 to 2009 at Crothersville and was currently the bowling coach at Crothersville.
Jim is survived by his only son, Jeffery (Theresa) Stewart, Crothersville; and his three granddaughters, Shelby (Tyler) Lemen, Indianapolis, and McKenzie and Sydney Stewart, Crothersville.
David Schill and Jon Pearce will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Crothersville with burial to follow at Crothersville Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home & Crematory and on Sunday from 1 p.m. until service time at the church.
