BRAZIL, Ind. —
Edward J. Ruhe, 73, of Brazil, passed away at 4:59 p.m. on Aug. 15, 2012, at home with his family by his side. Ed was born on June 13, 1939, in Ferdinand, Ind., the son of Edward H. Ruhe and Mary D. (Young) Ruhe. He graduated from Ferdinand High School in 1957 and joined the Army National Guard. After returning home from his duties he worked for Merkley’s Meat Processing Plant, in Ireland, Ind. He married Gloria Jean Schmitt on Sept. 10, 1960. In 1964 he moved his family to Brazil, where he was employed by Peter Eckrich Company, as a salesman. He retired from Eckrich in 1994 and began a successful business selling agriculture seeds (corn, soybeans and wheat) until he passed away.
While Ed’s career was in sales, he was born and raised on the Ruhe family farm and enjoyed farming in his free time all of his life. Family and friends looked forward each winter to “Butchering Day”, when Ed and his family spent the day making his delicious pork sausage. Popular with young people, Ed always carried sticks of Juicy Fruit for the many children he knew and was a father figure to many young men who knew and worked with him on his farm. He enjoyed raising livestock, hunting deer and pheasant, and playing cards. Known as “Big Ed”, he was a larger than life figure in the lives of his family, many friends, and colleagues. With his wife, Gloria, he enjoyed his family, friends and traveling. He was a member of the Annunciation Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, where he was an active member in several of their ministries, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Elks Lodge, and Moose Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward H. Ruhe and Mary (Young) Ruhe; and his younger brother, Thomas, all of Ferdinand.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Gloria Jean Ruhe of Brazil; four daughters and twin sons, Charlotte Ruhe, of London, England, Michelle (Jay) Burk of Brazil, Keith (Heather) Ruhe of Odon, Kevin (Julienne) Ruhe of Brazil, Denise (Scott) Smith of Brownsburg, and Melissa (Jeff) McGlocklin of Brazil; grandchildren, Natalia Ruhe, Katie and Thomas Edward Burk, Alexis and Lenzi Brewer, Alexis and Isaac Ruhe, Tyler Smith, and Wyatt and Emma Jean McGlocklin. He also is survived by one brother, James (Linda) Ruhe, of Ferdinand; sisters, Barbara (Tracy) Henning of Ferdinand, Rosemary (Bob) Bottorff of Jasper, and Alice (Joe) Garland of Jasper; sister-in-law, Mary Ruhe, also of Ferdinand; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Lawson-Miller Chapel, Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, from 3 to 8 p.m. and again Saturday, from 10 a.m. until noon. The Rosary will be recited at noon Saturday. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Annunciation Church at 1 p.m. with burial to follow at Clearview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Annunciation Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary Restoration Fund, 415 East Church St., Brazil, IN 47834 or MDS Foundation, 4573 South Broad St., Suite 150, Yardville, NJ 08620.
