Jessie Lee Ladd

TERRE HAUTE — Jessie Lee Ladd, 61, of Terre Haute, passed this way and went to sleep in the arms of the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, surrounded by her loving daughters, grandchildren, nephews, sons and sisters in South Bend.

She was born the first child of five sisters on Feb. 13, 1952, in Terre Haute, to the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Bruce Ladd and Lorine Kathine (Holmes) Ladd. She was preceded in death by a sister, Augustava (Gussie) Ladd, and her mother.

Jessie (Jess) was a lifelong resident of Terre Haute, having spent the last few months in South Bend, celebrating the time God gave, loving her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, sisters and friends. She graduated from Paul Schulte High School, before attending Indiana State University. She was employed by Sony Records for six years before joining the staff at Eli Lilly Labs in Clinton from which she retired after 33 years.

She was a member of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church, after professing a belief in Christ early in life, and she loved her church family, actively participating as both a leader and volunteer in the church.

She loved fishing and spent many summers traveling to the cabins at Kentucky Lake or other fishing holes that she and her dad, aunts and uncles and the “fishing crew” enjoyed for many years.

Jessie is survived by her father and stepmother, the Rev. Dr. Kenneth B. (Viola) Ladd; children, Imani (Pooh) Ingram, Dawn (Sissy) Powell of South Bend, and Joseph (Bubby) Ladd of Terre Haute; eight sisters, B. Irene Britt, Kenna L Mahmud and B. Lynetta Ladd of South Bend; Lonna (Curtis) Jones of Indianapolis, Laura Wakefield of Terre Haute, and Lynn (Bobby) Howard of Indianapolis; two very special sisters, Jean Garrett, Indianapolis, and Brenda Strong of Terre Haute; brother, the Rev. Derick (Teretta) Wakefield of Knoxville, Tenn.; her precious grandchildren, Maliks “Meek Meek,” Jaelyn “Lucy,” Kaya “Shug,” and Jocilynn “Joci”; nephews Donte “Tay” (Amanda) Britt of South Bend, and Barato “Mass” (Monica) Britt of Indianapolis; a great-nephew, Elijah “Man”; two great-nieces, Dev’n and Layrissa “Lay Lay”; adopted son, Demetriest; many loving aunts, uncles and cousins; and other adopted children.

The family is holding a celebration of life gathering in loving memory of Jess at 1 p.m., with the viewing at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at her home church, St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 1915 Buckeye St., in Terre Haute, with the Rev. Derick Wakefield officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.
