CASEY, Ill. — John Arthur Burkhardt Sr., 76, of Casey, Ill., passed away at 8:50 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was born May 22, 1936, in Evanston, Ill., the son of Paul Arthur Burkhardt and Edna M. Cown Burkhardt. In 1958, he married Doris L. Yoder, who passed away on June 29, 2000.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and brother, Herman Burkhardt.

Survivors include his companion and friend, Mary Ann McNeil of Casey; daughter, Pam Herriott and husband Jim of Lafayette, Colo.; son, John E. Burkhardt and his mother, Catherine Burkhardt of Bloomington; brother, George Burkhardt and wife Daisy of Martinsville, Ill.; sister, Marie Handley and husband Donald of Martinsville; granddaughter, Hannah Herriott; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Burkhardt was a partner in United Utilities Construction more than 30 years, until it was purchased by Miller Pipeline. He was a heavy equipment owner and operator. John was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 841 and a member of the National Rifle Association. He was a graduate of Martinsville High School.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at Greenwell Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dan Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Lindsey Cemetery, north of Martinsville, Ill. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, at the Greenwell Funeral Home, 30 N. Washington St., Martinsville, IL.
