Joan A. Lucas Brown Estes Martin

BRAZIL — Joan A. Lucas Brown Estes Martin, 78, of Brazil, formerly of West Terre Haute, passed away Dec. 26, 2012, at Exceptional Living Center. She had been a resident there since this past April due to Alzheimer’s disease.  

Joan was born Sept. 26, 1934, in Atlantic Highlands, N.J., the daughter of Claude and Miriam Bennett Lucas. At the age of eight, she traveled by train with her father to live in Indiana. She was raised in West Terre Haute, by her aunt and uncle Myrtle and Walter “Aude” Cox along with her cousin, Charles “Junior” Cox. She graduated from Valley High School, class of 1952. As a young girl she worked at Viquesney’s and then later worked at CBS as a secretary for 16 years.  

On Feb. 27, 1999, Joan married D. Warren Martin. She located in Brazil following their marriage. Warren has been a dedicated husband throughout this journey of Alzheimer’s.  

While in Brazil, Joan became active in the Brazil Professional Woman organization and has been very active in the past at Staunton First Christian Church.  

Survivors include her husband, D. Warren Martin of Brazil; daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie Britton and husband Lou Britton of Terre Haute, and Susie French and husband Charles French of Brazil; stepson, Mike Estes; stepdaughters, Peggy Berry, Maria Loving and husband John, and Lorna White; stepson, David Martin; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude Lucas and Miriam Aanneson; brother, Claude Lucas Jr.; stepdaughter, Marian Martin; cousin, Charles Cox Jr.

Services will be Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at 1 p.m. in French Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Parkey officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. To make a lasting donation in her memory please donate to Clay County Humane Shelter, 8280 N. Co. Rd. 125 W., Brazil, IN. 47834.
