James Taft ‘Rick’ Carpenter

TERRE HAUTE —

James Taft “Rick” Carpenter, 61, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 10:26 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, in Union Hospital. He was born May 29, 1951, in Clinton, to James Jack “Bud” Carpenter and June Abrams Carpenter.

Survivors include a sister, Cindy J. Carpenter of West Terre Haute; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Steve and Jill Carpenter, and Jay and Noemi Carpenter, all of West Terre Haute; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father; his mother and stepfather, June and Leeman Burch; his maternal grandparents, Taft and Edith Abrams; his paternal grandparents, Jim and Ruth Carpenter; two nieces, Lisa and Samantha Carpenter; and a nephew, Dax Carpenter.

Rick was a graduate of West Vigo High School Class of 1970. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, which he served during the Vietnam War. He became disabled in a motorcycle accident while he was serving in the military. He was well known around West Terre Haute and enjoyed just hanging out and visiting especially at the post office and the former Hagameyer’s Grocery Store. He also enjoyed reading.

Funeral services for Rick will be 1 p.m. Friday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Leek officiating. Burial will be in Bethesda Memorial Park, with graveside military rites by the Vigo County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and prior to services Friday.
