TERRE HAUTE —

Wilma Jean Wilkens Eckerty, 100, of Terre Haute died Sunday, December 23, 2012 in her residence. She was a retired teacher. She was born March 6, 1912, in Terre Haute to Albert H. Wilkens and Elizabeth Miller Wilkens.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, State Senator Gene Eckerty who was killed in World War II; and two brothers, Harry Wilkens and Paul Wilkens.

Memberships include Memorial United Methodist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Colonist Fort Harrison Chapter, Colonial Dames XVII Century, Vigo County and Indiana Historical Society, Vigo County and Indiana Retired Teachers, Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and was a former member of Delta Gamma Teacher Society. She graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1934 and taught both in the Gibson County Schools and Vigo County Schools before retiring in 1973 from Sarah Scott Junior High School.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 27, 2012, in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, with Reverend Scott Johnson and Reverend Dr. Charles Ballard officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Lawn Cemetery. Friends are invited to gather at the funeral home from 10:30 a.m. until service time on Thursday, December 27, 2012. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to Memorial United Methodist Church, 2701 Poplar Street, Terre Haute, IN 47803 or to VNA Hospice of the Wabash Valley, 400 8th Avenue, Terre Haute, IN 47804.

Wilma’s friends would like to say thank you to the staff of Westminster Village, Dr. K. Oommen, Dr. V. Reddy and the ladies of Companion Care for their care and compassion shown to Wilma.
