TERRE HAUTE — Charles F. “Fred” Dean, 82, of Terre Haute, passed away May 4, 2012, at his residence. He was born on July 25, 1929, to Arthur and Eva Yates Dean. He retired in 1984 from the U.S. Postal Service, where he was a longtime rural mail carrier. He married Martha (Criss) Dean on April 24, 1949, in Pimento, Ind., and recently they celebrated their 63rd anniversary.

He also is survived by a daughter, Judy Acree and her husband Bob of Brazil; a son, Darrell Dean and his wife Sandy of New Goshen; a brother, John A. Dean of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Mike and Amy Acree and William-Dean Acree, all of Terre Haute; and great-grandchildren, Ashton and Kaitlynn Acree. He has one uncle, Earl Dean of Washington state, and his faithful dog, Ginnie. There are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and extended family friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cynthia Dean; a sister, Wanda Watson; and a nephew, Leroy Watson, Sr.

Fred was a longtime member of William Penn Masonic Lodge 727, F&AM, where he was master in 1969. He was also an honorary member of numerous Masonic lodges throughout the Wabash Valley. He also belonged to the Rural Letter Carriers Postal Union. Fred was an avid gardener, active father and grandfather, and a good friend to many. He was also an honorably discharged veteran of Korea where he served with the 82nd Airborne Division.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday at DeBaun Springhill Chapel with the Rev. Marvin Miller officiating. Calling hours are today from 4 to 8 p.m. with Masonic memorial services at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Nyes Cemetery in Sullivan County. The family asks that contributions in his memory be made to Terre Haute Humane Society. Online condolences may be offered at:
