TERRE HAUTE — Howard David Smith Sr., 90, of Terre Haute, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2012, in Union Hospital. Howard was born September 5, 1921, in Terre Haute, to Ira Smith and Cecil Marie Smith. He was a mechanic most of his life, as well as being a United States Army veteran.

Howard enjoyed racing, especially quarter-midgets. He enjoyed working with his hands around the house, especially tinkering with things when they needed fixed.  He most of all loved his family, especially anytime there was a baby around. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972 in earlier years.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents; and a sister, Mildred Atterson.

He is survived by his wife, Winifred Sands Smith; two sons, James Smith Sr., and Howard David Smith Jr. and his wife Janine, all of Terre Haute. Three daughters; Pauline Galloway, Cindy Yocum, and Davine K. Williams and her husband Otis W. Williams Jr., all of Terre Haute. Twelve grandchildren, Jamie Giovanni, James Smith Jr., Amy Tapy, Ridgley Smith, Chasity Aguilar, Bonnie Fuelle, Elizabeth Galloway, Erin Galloway, Jacinda Denice Benefiel, Dakota W. Williams, Cinthia D. K. Williams, and Otis W. Williams III; thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.  He is also survived by many other nieces, nephews, and loving friends and family.

Funeral services for Howard will be held Thursday, May 3, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N. 13th St., with the Rev. Keith Taylor officiating.  Burial will follow in Highland Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2012, also at Greiner Funeral Home.
