Doris Y. “Dot” Harvey passed from this life on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012. She was born to William W. Harvey and Virginia T. (Pine) Harvey on Aug. 15, 1929, in Hume, Ill. They moved to Terre Haute from Prairieton, Ind., when Doris was 15. An only child, she was close with her uncle Ralph W. Pine throughout her life, and looked upon him as something of a brother.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Ralph; as well as special cousin, Sandra Rogers-Worchester; and daughter-in-law, Lorie Carrico.
Dot worked longest at Great Scott Supermarket on Locust Street, spending 14 years there as a cashier, office clerk and union steward. She was frequently recognized by people from her time there, including people who remembered “going through her line” with their parents as children. She was a voracious reader, collected penguins and Santa Claus statuary, loved to embroider since the age of five and was a die-hard Cincinnati Reds fan. She also worked as a Foster Grandmother at Fuqua Elementary and greatly enjoyed being “Grandma Doris.”
Doris divorced her husband of 15 years in 1969 and experienced a great deal of negative reaction in a time when divorce was not as accepted as it is now. She raised her three children with little more than the help of her mother. She also played a significant role in the lives of many of her cousins, including Sandra and her sister, Pamela Rogers-Parker.
Doris is survived by her three children, Donna “Lynn” Harvey, Steven L. (Cindy) Harvey, and William A. Carrico. She also is survived by her grandchildren, Specialist Matthew L. Harvey (U.S. Army), Matthew W. (Jessica) Griese, Melissa Griese, Jamie (Jon) Wilson, and Jessica Searing; great-grandchildren, Logan, Lily, Daisy, Eli, Kalynn, Jillian, Mckade, Gabriel, and Joci; and many cousins.
Dot’s family would like to thank the staff of Springhill Village Senior Community for the wonderful care they provided her with during her two year stay. They provided her with a much better quality of life than she might otherwise have experienced.
Visitation will be today, Aug. 9, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home, 602 S. 7th St. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 10, 2012. at the funeral home, with burial to follow in Pleasant View Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Diabetes Association. Online condolences may be shared at: www.mattoxryan.com
