Harold Herbert (Herbie) Wilson, 87, of Terre Haute, made his heavenly ascent on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012. He was born in Terre Haute, Ind., on June 7, 1925, to Autra Wilson and Flossie B Clark Wilson. He graduated from Wiley High School in 1942. Herbie met Clara (Kat) Kathryn Hill in South Pittsburg, Tenn., at the Kilgore’s Café and married her in 1945.
At a young age he started working for Olin Corp. and Nilo Barge Line. Until retirement 42 years later Herbie worked on the Tennessee River, Illinois River, Ohio River, Mississippi River and many others. He started as a deck hand on the Alexander McKensey, working his way up and becoming a licensed riverboat Captain, piloting boats including the Mississippi Queen, Julie Ann, Mustang, Theresa Seley and James F. Towey. He continued to work with the barge line as a consultant, expert witness and arbitrator, after retirement. His many interests kept him busy; including carpentry, macramé, camping, cooking, playing cards, flowers, animals and had a passion for gardening and shared his wealth with all. He took pride in his career but truly relished his family and many friends. In 1949 he joined the Masonic lodge number 178, was a long time member of the Prairieton Order of Eastern Star No. 163, serving as the worthy patron for eight years and a former member of the Kerman Grotto and Zorah Shrine.
Herbie is survived by his wife of 66 years, Clara (Kat) Kathryn Wilson; children, Beverlie Carol Jory, Sharon D. Keegan, Harold E. Wilson, wife Sandy, Randy G. Wilson; wife Brenda, Debbie M. Quenzler husband Ron, Barbara E. Gough, partner Rudy Solomon, Kevin W. Wilson, Jeffery L. Wilson, his wife Gracie; sister, Shelby S. Higgins; brother, Dennis R. Wilson, his wife Joyce; 23 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and one on the way; three great-great-grandchildren and one on the way.
He was preceded in death by daughter, Pamela K. Chambers, her husband Norman (Bucky); grandsons Christopher Chambers and Ryan G. Wilson; and son-in-law, Walter G. Keegan.
Memorial services have been scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at 3 p.m. at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive. The Rev. Duane Caperton will be officiating. Family and friends are invited to come to the funeral home on Saturday from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. to visit and share memories. Masonic and Order of Eastern Star services will begin at 2:30 p.m. A tribute and celebration of life will be on Aug. 18, 2012, at 5 p.m., details will be at the funeral home, during visitation time on Saturday.
