Edwin Manus, 90, of Terre Haute, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at home with his family in Seelyville. He was born March 14, 1922, in Terre Haute, to Albert and Isabell Manus, though his family relocated to North Carolina shortly thereafter. Later in his childhood they returned to Riley, where Ed resided until he enlisted in the service of his country. During the Second World War, he surveyed hundreds of miles of uncharted and virtually uninhabited Alaskan territory to facilitate the construction of the Alcan Highway. After serving in the North, he was asked to transfer to the Navy Corps of Engineers, and during his time in their service he assisted in the clean-up restoration of ships damaged in the attack on Pearl Harbor. After the war Ed found his way back to Indiana, where he met his future wife, Margaret Wyatt. They were married May 20, 1950, in Seelyville United Methodist Church. He was employed in several vocations throughout his life; including a salesman and as proprietor of the Heap Big Beef Restaurant. He worked the longest as a pest-control man and, simultaneously, in his true calling as a pastor. Ed presided over many congregations over the years, spending his last year in the pulpit at Smith Park United Methodist Church in West Terre Haute. Ed was an active volunteer in the Boy Scouts for many years, and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver award. He also served as president of the Terre Haute Chapter of the Lion’s Club. He spent much of his free time in his beloved garden, renowned in the community for its richness of flowers, fruits and vegetables. Ed was, however, best known by all for his charitable nature and exceedingly kind disposition, and to his family he was a loving and giving husband, father and grandfather.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Mary and Evelyn.
Edwin is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret; his daughter, Vickie Henderson and her husband David; and grandchildren, Alex Manus, Mark Schaefer, Alyssa Henderson. and Taylor Henderson.
Services will be Saturday, June 23, 2012, at 12 noon at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th St., in Terre Haute. Visitation will be Friday, June 22, 2012, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jack Dial officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to Seelyville United Methodist Church or Boy Scouts of America Troop 200. Online condolences may be made at: www.greinerfuneralhome.com
