Iona Masten Hightower

Iona Masten Hightower, beloved wife of Toby Hightower, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, in Terre Haute, Ind. Iona was born April 21, 1922, to Charles M. Masten and Flora Masten. She was the sweetheart, companion, best friend, and partner of Toby for over 50 years of marriage.

Iona had an undergraduate degree from Illinois State University and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois. After graduation, she enjoyed a lengthy and distinguished career as a high school teacher in the Illinois public school system.

Sharing a love for travel, she and Toby made many friends as they traveled the world. Retirement simply meant more friends and new adventures, with Toby and Iona building their own home in rural Parke County, Ind. Toby and Iona shared many a cup of coffee and lively conversation with friends at the Inn at Turkey Run State Park. Iona enjoyed gardening, and their home was well-known for beautiful flowers. Always ready for an intellectual challenge, Iona was an avid reader who also delighted in besting Toby when the Sunday crossword puzzle arrived. Iona also was a stealth dog lover, and Sit and Dig knew she was a soft touch. Although she maintained an immaculate house, their comfort and needs always came first.

Iona was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Harold Masten; and sisters, Glena Masten and Kathryn Maxheimer. In addition to Toby, Iona is survived by Toby’s children, Randy Hightower and Shirley Luten; sister, Helen Nichols; nephews, Darrell Maxheimer, Richard Nichols, and Terry Nichols; and niece, Linda Leefers.

Visitation is Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Latham’s Funeral Home in Elkton, Ky.  There will be a graveside service following the visitation at 11:30 a.m. at Glenwood Cemetery in Elkton.

Iona lived a full life, secure in Toby’s unceasing love and devotion. We mourn her passing but celebrate a life well-lived.
