  GRAPEVINE, Texas — In one of their most dramatic choices in a century, local leaders of the Boy Scouts of America voted Thursday to ease a divisive ban and allow openly gay boys to be accepted into the nation's leading youth organization.

TERRE HAUTE — Betty J. Akers, 82, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. at Southwood Health & Rehab following a brief illness. She was born June 14, 1930, in Sullivan County to Charles and Helen Wagner.

Betty has been a resident of Terre Haute for 53 years upon her marriage to Robert Akers, who survives. Other survivors include brothers, Gene Wagner of Ft. Myers, Fla., Norman and Harry Wagner of Terre Haute. She has two sisters, Sally Thompson of Columbus, Ind., and JoAnn Anderson of Daleville, Ind. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.  

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robert.

She attended Memorial United Methodist Church.

Private services will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to VNA Hospice of Wabash Valley, 400 Eighth Ave. Arrangements are entrusted to DeBaun Springhill Chapel. Online condolences may be left at: www.debaunfuneralhomes.com
