TERRE HAUTE —
Cecil “Newt” or “Junior” Cox, 86, of Terre Haute, and formerly of Hillsdale and Bloomingdale, died at 9:10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at Indiana University Health-Methodist Hospital, in Indianapolis. He was a retired operating engineer. He was born Nov. 30, 1925, in West Union, Ind., to the late Cecil Cox and Letta Manley Cox. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Alice “Pete” Reed Cox, whom he married June 28, 1948, in Tangier, she died June 5, 2010.
Survivors include one daughter, Penny Money and her husband James Money of Hillsdale; four brothers, Donald Cox of Indianapolis, Dane Cox of Montezuma, Larry Cox of Chrisman, Ill., and Joe Cox of Montezuma; grandchildren, Barry (Rebecca) Cox, Jeremy (fiancé Shannon Walters) Cox, Alexus Cox, Jeremy Cox II, Alysha Cox, Kade Cox, Chance Cox, James Money II, Jennifer Money, MacKenzi Becker, Peyton Becker and Keith Money; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by a son, Tony Lee Cox on Oct. 12, 2011; brothers, Harold Cox, Howard Cox, Charles Cox, Bill Cox and Kenny Cox; sisters, Velma Moyer and Nadine Poloncic.
During World War II he first joined the U.S. Calvary until it was disbanded, then going to serve with the U.S. Army, where he participated in the India-Burma Campaign, Central Burma Campaign and both the China Offensive and Defensive Campaigns. When the war was over he had walked all the way across Burma. He was decorated with the Combat Infantry Badge, Asiatic Pacific Service Metal and Ribbon and the WWII Victory Medal. He was a 62-year member of the Operating Engineers Local 841 in Terre Haute, member of Montezuma Lodge 89 Free and Accepted Masons, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, and both Parke and Vermillion County Low 12 clubs. With his horse named “Pal” he and his daughter participated in many activities including contesting, barrels, kegs and flags. He also was well known for his square dancing ability while on a horse. After retirement his hobby was restoring Model T cars and rebuilding wrecked cars. He had a lifelong positive attitude and during the past two-and-a-half years, while living at Cobblestone Crossing, he was devoted to the care of his wife. He will be remembered as being a light to everyone’s life.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, in Gooch Funeral Home, 112 W. Howard St., in Rockville, with Pastor Keith B. McIntyre officiating. Burial, with military graveside honors by Parke County Veterans, will follow in Oakland Cemetery, Montezuma. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
