LEWIS — God called John Robert Prather home on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012. John passed away in his residence at age 70.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jean; two sons, Rob and his wife Laura of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Christopher and his wife Michelle of Lewis; three grandchildren, Courtney, Jared, and Zoe; and four sisters, Mildred Lewis, Evelyn Roberts, Estee Shadow, and Frances Belleu. John also is survived by several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret Prather; a sister, Mary Phelps; and three brothers, Norman, Danny, and Fred Prather.

John was a devoted father and grandfather, and he was happiest when spending time with his family. John loved people and never met a stranger, he loved his home in Lewis and enjoyed working in his yard. John retired as the product manager from Bemis Company, Inc. in Terre Haute after 36 years of service. He participated with Junior Achievement and was a member of Vigo Masonic Lodge 29 Free & Accepted Masons. John was a deacon in his church, Union Baptist Church and was a member of a very loving church family.

John’s funeral service will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, in Union Baptist Church, 4075 E. Harlan Drive, in Terre Haute, with Pastors Marvin Miller and Rod Maris officiating. Visitation will be 1 p.m. until service time in the church Tuesday. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church with envelopes available.
