Annena Jeroma Shaffer passed away Jan. 20, 2013, in Colorado Springs, Colo., surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 4, 1937, to Fortunato and Maria (Caruso) Perrelle, in Terre Haute, the only daughter and fifth child of Italian immigrant parents. She graduated from Schulte High School in 1955. Annena was married to Roy Edward Shaffer on Nov. 28, 1959, at Sacred Heart Church.

She was known as a woman who loved God and country. As an Air Force wife, she traveled extensively all over the world, living in several foreign countries while accompanying her husband to various Far East and European assignments. She was an integral part of and strong supporter of the military family.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Roy; children, Roy Shaffer Jr. (Shirley) of Rome, Ga., Summer (Mitch) Hamdeed of Colorado Springs, Ronald (Debbie) Shaffer of Acton, Calif., Dawn (Derek) Sloan of Woodland Hills, Calif., and Roman (Hiroko) Shaffer of Irvine, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her sisters-in-law, Shirley Sappingfield of Terre Haute, and Sherril Harlow of Billett, Wis,; brothers-in-law, Fred Shaffer (Marilyn) of Boca Raton, Fla., Ronald Shaffer and Johnny Hathaway, both of Terre Haute; and a large extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews living in the Terre Haute area and scattered about the country. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Anthony, Joseph, George, and Nicholas and each of their spouses.

She will be affectionately remembered as a gracious, kind, generous and dedicated woman who valued all living things. She had many interests, loved to dance, and supported numerous charitable causes, especially those concerning children, the elderly and animals.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 4, 2013, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, 2322 N. 13 1/2 Street, in Terre Haute. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a charity of choice. Contact online at:
