John Richard Holdren, 87, of Boynton Beach, Fla., passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at 6 a.m. at his home surrounded by family. He was born Feb. 17, 1925, in Anderson, Ind., to Henry Ray Holdren and Della Jane Reynolds Holdren, both of whom preceded him in death.
John was raised in Cicero, Ind. After graduating from Cicero High School in 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the 100th Infantry Division in Germany and France from 1943-1946. He attended Indiana University but left school prior to graduation to assist his family with their grocery business, Hank’s Supermarket in Anderson, Ind. John worked many years in the grocery industry prior to co-founding Great Scot Supermarkets in 1962. The original Great Scot in Terre Haute had people lined up for blocks awaiting its grand opening. The chain eventually included two stores in Terre Haute and four in Evansville. The company was sold and John retired to Florida in 1984 where John enjoyed many years of boating and fishing in the beautiful waters off Florida and the Bahamas. He shared his love of boating and fishing with family and friends. He left us all with wonderful memories of time spent on his boat the “Popper” with Popper (as he was fondly known by his grandchildren). John and Carol were members of the Gulfstream Yacht Club and enjoyed many rendezvous with the group. He later served as their Commodore.
Survived by his wife, Carol Holdren of Boynton Beach; Teresa Jack (Robert) of Sarasota, Fla.; Jerri H. Monroe (Jay Bee) of Oklahoma City, Okla.; stepson Ronald L. Robertson Jr. (Brenda) of El Paso, Texas; brothers, James Lee Holdren of Marion and Joseph Holdren of Louisville, Ky. and niece Judy Hatfield Strain (Richard) of Carmel and Naples, Fla. Surviving grandchildren are Todd Hudson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Traci Rusek (Pavel) of Woodstock, Ga.; Luke Monroe (Katie) of Oklahoma City; Spencer Monroe of Oklahoma City; Andrea Robertson of Monterey, Calif.; and Amber Robertson Salazar of Ft. Sill, Okla. There are four surviving great-grandchildren: Chloe Marie Rusek, Kaden Miles Rusek, Leo Casey Monroe, Lily Faye Monroe. He was predeceased by his brother, Bob Ray Holdren, and by his first wife, Dorothy “Skeeter” Chitwood Holdren in 1976.
Visiting hours will be on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, at Lorne & Sons Funeral Home, 745 NE Sixth Avenue (Federal Highway Northbound) in Delray Beach, from 2 to 4 p.m. with a funeral service at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Robert Collins. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Fisher House Foundation or Army Emergency Relief or the American Red Cross, all of which provide assistance to military families in need.
