TERRE HAUTE —
Clyde F. Umphries Sr., 80, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 3:45 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, in Royal Oaks Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. He retired as a barber after 35 years of service and also retired from the Laborers International Union Local 204 after many years of service. He was born Feb. 3, 1932, in West Terre Haute, to Joseph Lewis Umphries and Mary Darkis Umphries.
Survivors include six children, Harold Umphries (Cindy), Mickey Joe Umphries (Deborah), Clyde F. “Sonny” Umphries Jr., Susie Stafford, Sheena Patterson, and Gertrude “Gertie” Orndorf; two brothers, Paul Umphries and Claude Umphries; a stepsister, Rebecca Dewey (Melvin); 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; his former wife and mother of his children, Alyce Pestoff; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Raymond Umphries.
He was a graduate of Indiana Barbers College and the Vincennes University Auctioneers College. He was a lifetime member of the Cloven Hooves.
Clyde’s funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Leek officiating. Burial will be in Dunlap Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, and prior to services Sunday. The family kindly suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Clyde Umphries Memorial Fund, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
