Montezuma —
Robert W. Hill, 89, of Montezuma, Ind. died at 7:08 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2012, in his residence. He was retired president of the National Bank of Greenwood. He was born March 29, 1923, in Sullivan, Ind. to the late Alex Hill and Louise Funkhouser Hill. His wife of 68 years Annabelle Fisher Hill whom he married Nov. 21, 1942, in Rockville died Dec. 16, 2010.
Survivors include two sons, Robert W. Hill, Jr. and wife Marilyn Hill of Newburg, Ind. and John David Hill and wife Carole Hill of Greenwood, Ind.; one daughter, Janis Harding of Montezuma; four brothers, Jim Hill of Montezuma, Ed Hill of Crawfordsville, Ben Hill of St. Bernice, Paul Hill of Dallas; two sisters, Becky Miller of Rockville, Susan Cory of Tangier; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Larry Harding on Aug. 18, 2006. He was a graduate of Mecca High School and attended Grinnell (IA) College while in the service. He served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corp as a B-29 pilot with the 20th Air Command over the Pacific receiving the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Medal. After the service he was employed as a butcher for Lee Brother’s Grocery in Rockville, served in the Veteran Administration office in Parke County and later became employed by the Rockville National Bank. He later moved his family to Greenwood when he accepted a position with National Bank of Greenwood. He was a member of the Rockville Christian Church serving many years as an Elder and Sunday school teacher and member of the Friendship Sunday school class. He was a former member of the Greenwood Christian Church serving also as Elder and Sunday school teacher. He was Past Master of Parke Masonic lodge 8, a 33rd degree mason he was member of Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, Zorah Shrine of Terre Haute, Parke County Low 12 Club, Parke County REMC Roundup awards committee and Past President of the Indiana Bankers Association. He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Robert D. Orr. Active in civic and community affairs he was a former member of Greenwood Rotary and Johnson County Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Board of Directors for Rockville National Bank. Service will be 11:00 am Monday, June 11, in Gooch Funeral Home at 112 W. Howard Street, Rockville with the Rev. Patrick J. Fahey officiating. Burial with military graveside honors by Parke County Veterans will follow in Memory Garden Cemetery, Rockville.
