MARSHALL, Ill. — Mary Eileen Ellington, 89, of Marshall, passed away 4:55 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012, at Burnsides Community Health Center in Marshall. She was born March 11, 1922, in Dolson Township, Clark County, Ill., the daughter of Sylvan Morgan and Alfa Burkett Morgan. She married Edward E. Ellington on Nov. 16, 1941, at Marshall, and he preceded her in death on March 4, 2004.
Surviving are two sons, Carrol (Doris) Ellington of Marshall and Randy (Linda) Ellington of Holts Summitt, Mo.; a daughter, Anita Rice of Monrovia, Ind.; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Ellington of Marshall; a sister, Lila June (Stanley) Davis of Marshall; grandchildren, Amanda Miles, Bryce Ellington, Jeremy Ellington, Windy Delp, Lucas Ellington, Lesley Bickel and Ryan Rice; great-grandchildren, Drew Miles, Mirra Miles, Bentley Delp, Elliana Delp, Emmalyn Delp and Charlotte Bickel; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to being preceded in death by her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Ellington; a great-granddaughter, Annabelle Bickel; and two brothers, Eugene Morgan and Dean Morgan.
She was a member of First Christian Church of Marshall, where she taught Sunday School for several years. She had been a teacher’s aide at both Marshall South and North Elementary Schools. She volunteered her time to the Homework Hangout of the First Christian Church and had been a counselor of Summer Camp for Handicapped Children in Marshall. She was a member of Walter Burdick Chapter of the D.A.R. and Ladies Auxiliary of Clark County Post 90 of the American Legion. She had been a Cub Scout Den Mother for many years and had been a member of the award-winning American Legion Choir in the 1950s and 1960s. During her lifetime she sang at various wedding and funerals including the funeral of Bessie Cooper who was a gypsy queen.
Services in honor of her life will be 10:30 a.m. CST Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at First Christian Church, 902 N. 6th St., in Marshall, with Brothers, John Cutshall and Stacey Smith officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, rural Martinsville, Ill. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the church. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Pleasant Cemetery Association, Homework Hangout, First Christian Church or to Five Points Christian Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Pearce Funeral Home of Marshall.
