TERRE HAUTE —
Sister Beatrice Hoberg, age 95, died at 3:15 a.m. Sunday, March 3, 2013, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born in Chicago, on Nov. 2, 1917, to Louis and Julia Linskey Hoberg, and was baptized Beatrice Margaret.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 11, 1937, and was given the name Sister Mary Canice. She professed final vows Aug. 15, 1945. Sister earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, and a master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati. In her 76 years as a Sister of Providence, she taught music for 40 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois and California. During these years, she co-authored a classroom music series “To God Through Music” published by Gregorian Institute of America in 1955. Some of the music in this series were her original compositions. In 1976, she also co-authored some reading workbooks for primary grades published by Economy Co. In 1980, she moved to Terre Haute where she ministered at Simeon House for four years as activities director and later, program director. She then moved to Mother Theodore Guerin Convent in River Grove, Ill., giving service to sisters while continuing composing. In 1996, she moved to the Motherhouse. Besides volunteering for many duties there, she co-authored with Sister Brendan Harvey “The Story of Anne Théresè” a biography of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin for children which was put in coloring book form in 2006. Both of these are still available from The Gift Shop at Providence Center.
Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by a sister, Julia Vignola; and a brother, Joseph Hoberg.
The wake is Thursday, March 7, 2013, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the Wake Service at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial is Friday, March 8, 2013, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
