William Burton Woodruff ‘Burton’

TERRE HAUTE — William Burton Woodruff “Burton,” 91, of Terre Haute, passed away in his home at 5:22 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012. He was born in Edwardsport, Ind., to William Franklin Woodruff and Nelle Mae (Hash) Woodruff, on May 26, 1921. Burton graduated from Edwardsport High School in 1939. He served in the Fifth Army, Artillery Division in World War II and was in North Africa, the Battle of Cassino, Rome, and the Arno River. He was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972, American Legion Post 104, and a life member of the National Rifle Association. Burton retired from Public Service of Indiana in 1986 after 39 years of employment as a switchboard operator.

Burton was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Nelle Woodruff; and brother, Maurice Woodruff.  

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary A. (Sanders) Woodruff; daughter, Elaine Joyce York of Terre Haute; sons, William Burton Woodruff II of Terre Haute and Charles Franklin Woodruff of Brazil; sister, Marilyn Frederick and her husband Dr. Terry Frederick of Winter Springs, Fla.; grandchildren Dr. Richard A. Bonness, wife Dr. Ann Bonness of Plainfield, Shelley Bullock, husband Paul Bullock of Bloomington, Jessica Newton, husband Jerod Newton of Terre Haute, Justin Woodruff and his wife Ricka Woodruff of Terre Haute; great-grandchildren, Chance Bedford, Andrew Bonness, Aline Bedford, Grace Bonness, William Henry Woodruff, and Baden Bullock; nephews, Johnny Frederick and Jeff Frederick; and niece Jackie Mueller.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at 1 p.m. at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive. Pastor Keith Taylor will be officiating. Entombment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Online condolences can be made at: www.debaunfuneralhomes.com
