CLAY COUNTY —
William R. (Bill) Jackson, 84, died peacefully on Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, surrounded by family and friends. Bill was born on May 8, 1928, in Clay County, to Martha Jewel (Modesitt) and Clarence D. Jackson. He married Nelda R. (Baker) Jackson on Dec. 25, 1950, and they were married for 47 years, until her death in 1998. He also was predeceased in 2008 by his wife, Mary Moseman Flesher, whom he married in 1999.
He was a devoted father to Janell Baker Jackson and Amy Jackson (Stephen) Salay; grandfather to Shannon R. McNamara, Rachel Elise and Stephen William Salay; and great-grandfather to Ashton C. Fleming and Alyssa J. Huffman. He was a brother to Wayne R. Jackson and his wife Patty, and Esther M. Reagin of Cory. Additionally, he is survived by Marsha E. (Ames) Jackson.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ernest L. Jackson; and sister, Joanna F. Minor. He is survived by many nieces and nephews and a large extended family, as well as many life-long friends.
Bill graduated from Cory High School in 1946 and served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952. He graduated from Indiana State Teacher’s College in 1956 and Wright State University with a Master’s Degree in 1971. He had a 30-year career as an educator and mentor at Sunman High School in Sunman, Beavercreek High School, Beavercreek, Ohio, Fairmont East High School and Fairmont High School in Kettering, Ohio. He was honored to be inducted into the Chester A. Roush Educational Hall of Fame in 2010. Bill was a long-time member of the Dorwood Optimist Club, serving as Chair of many committees and both Club President and Lt. Governor during his many years in the club. All who knew Bill enjoyed his wit and sense of humor, and admired his work ethic and personal sense of honor. He worked very hard to provide for his family, better his community and leave the world better in the form of children, well loved, students, well taught, and a community, well served. He will be loved and missed always.
A visitation will be Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at Oak Creek United Church of Christ, 5280 Bigger Road, Kettering, OH 45440, from 10 a.m. to noon, followed immediately by a celebration of life service, officiated by the Revs. Pat Whiting and Dr. Mike Carman. He will be laid to rest at David’s Cemetery immediately following the service. If friends desire, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Kettering Noon Optimist Club Scholarship Fund in Honor and Memory of Nelda and William Jackson, P.O.
