Winifred Pauline Evelyn Sands Smith

TERRE HAUTE — Winifred Pauline Evelyn Sands Smith, 90, of Terre Haute, passed away Saturday, June 2. 2012, in the Terre Haute Nursing and Rehabilitation Home. Winifred was born July 9, 1921, in Terre Haute, to Fred “Alex” Sands and Rose Gertrude Johnson Smith.   

She worked at Vigo County School Corporation, United States Postal Service, and David Gardens and the Tulip Plant.

Winifred loved being with the grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great- grandson. Babysitting and cooking. Any time you needed her she was there. She loved dad to take her on drives to visit us.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents; husband, Howard David Smith Sr.; two sisters, Dorothy R. Sands Foster and Georgia R. Sands Green.; three brothers, Robert E. Sands, James F. Sands, and Paul R. Sands; and great-grandson, Brandon Levi Thomas Elmore; and granddaughter, Patricia Michelle Galloway. She is survived by three daughters, Winifred Pauline Smith Galloway, Cindy Smith Yocum and Davine Kristine Smith Williams and husband Otis; two sons, James R. Smith Sr., and Howard David Smith Jr., and his wife Janine, all of Terre Haute; 12 grandchildren, Bonnie Galloway Fuelle and husband Dan, Elizabeth Galloway, Erin Galloway, Jacinda Denice Benefiel; Jamie Smith Giovanni, James Smith Jr., Amy Tapy, Ridgley Smith Chasity Smith-Aguilar and husband Enrique, Dakota Williams, Cinthia Williams, and Otis W. Williams III; 13 great-grandchildren, BrandyGail Mattox and husband Micheal, Danny Smith Jr., Adrianna Smith, Mathew Facemyer, Elise Iocoangeli, Xoey Washington, Savanna Washington, Tiernan Fiddler, Austin Smith, Luke D. Aguliar, Landen I Aguliar, Alexzandria Tapy, and Abigail Tapy; one great-great-grandchild, Jude Michael Mattox; and many nieces, nephews, loving friend, and family.

Funeral service for Winifred will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2012, at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th St., in Terre Haute, with the Rev. Keith Taylor Officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Online condolences may be made at: www.greinerfuneralhome.com
