TERRE HAUTE —

Thomas L. Newport Sr., 67, of Terre Haute, passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, athis home, surrounded by his family, after a short battle with cancer. He was born on Nov. 5, 1944, in Terre Haute, to George and Sarah (Brandon) Newport. He married Daphne Hatt on Jan. 19, 1974. Thomas was a graduate of Garfield High School. He was a 32nd Degree Mason in the West Terre Haute Masonic Lodge 687, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, a member of the Sons of the American Legion Krietenstein Post 104, Legion Riders 104, Marine Corps League Joseph Bray Detachment, and the Murdock Racing Club. He enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, hunting, golfing, woodworking, trap and skeet shooting, and riding motorcycles. He will be deeply missed.

Thomas is survived by his wife of 38 years, Daphne; sons, Thomas L. Newport Jr. and his wife Karen and David R. Newport and his wife Dawn, all of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Mitchell T. Newport of LaPorte, and Sarah Beth Newport and Jeremy Auterson, both of Terre Haute; a great-grandson, Logan Auterson; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Earl Newport; and a sister, Barbara Cone.

Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, June 1, 2012, at Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St., with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Services will be at 11 a.m., today, June 2, 2012, at the funeral home, with Pastor Steve Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park.
